Crime Alert for January 6, 2006
AVIS, 850 Tower, 11/25 Complainant reported a Pontiac Grand Prix leased under the name of a 78-year-old female from Detroit has not been returned despite numerous correspondence attempts to contact lessee.
Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud:
Discovery Channel Store, 2800 W. Big Beaver, 12/27, 1845 hrs.
Complainant reported two males purchased $280.00 worth of merchandise with a Western Union money order in the amount of $350.00. They were given $80.00 in change. Complainant later contacted Western Union and was advised the check was fraudulent. Additional investigation revealed the money order was real, but stolen from a closed Western Union location in Detroit. It appears the suspects may have made additional purchases at other stores using the fraudulent money orders. Investigation continues.
Domestics/Family Troubles:
Troy Officers responded to four incidents involving family troubles/domestic disputes where investigation revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no formal enforcement action taken/required.
Drugs/Narcotics:
Lyons, 1-2, 1300 hrs.
Officers responded to report of two subjects who appeared to be asleep in a car. Upon arrival, they located an ‘85 Chevrolet Caprice occupied by a 23-year-old male from Detroit and a 25-year-old male from Detroit. When they approached and asked the driver to open the window, a strong odor of burnt marijuana was detected. It appeared the subjects had just finished smoking. A baggie of marijuana was recovered from the 23 year old and he was arrested.
Home Invasions:
Trombley, 12/30, 1820-1830 hrs.
Complainant left attached garage open while he went out to get gas. Upon his return, he discovered two snow throwers had been stolen. He observed a suspicious white pick-up in the area that he felt might have been involved.
Larcenies:
SMART Terminal, 2021 Barrett, 12/31, 1850-1900 hrs.
Complainant reported he left his backpack at a workstation while he went to lunch. When he returned, it was gone.
Farmer Jack’s, 2105 W. South Blvd. 12/31, 1300-2200 hrs.
Tailgate stolen from a ’98 Chevy Silverado.
East Big Beaver, 1/1, 0200-1700 hrs.
Plate stolen from ’93 Buick Century parked in lot.
Bowl One, 1639 E. 14 Mile, 12/31, 0030-0223 hrs.
Complainant reported his bowling equipment, valued at approximately $1000.00 was stolen. He left the items unattended near the door while he visited with his friends.
Radio Shack, 817 E. Big Beaver, 12/30
Complainant reported during the course of a floor inventory, they discovered three DVD players missing. Complainant believes they were possibly stolen when a group of four individuals came into the store together on two separate occasions wherein two of the females seemed to be trying to distract sales personnel, while the two males were lingering around the display area from which the merchandise is missing.
Oakland Mall, 412 W. 14 Mile, 12/22
Complainant reported she cashed her check and placed $600.00 in cash in her purse. She left the purse in a shopping cart being pushed by her female associate while she went into a fitting room to try on some clothes. When she got home, she discovered the money missing. When she tried to contact her associate about the money, the complainant reported her associate wouldn’t talk to her.
Office, 1835 Technology, 12/22-12/29
Three computers stolen from storage area. No sign of forced entry.
Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver, 1/1, 0500-0630 hrs.
Television stolen from bar area.
Marshall Field’s, 500 W. 14 Mile, 1-2, 1630 hrs.
Complainant stated she left her wallet in the fitting room while she modeled clothes she was trying on. When she returned she claimed the wallet was gone.
Larcenies from Autos:
Bally’s , 201 W. Big Beaver, 12/30, 2158 hrs.
’96 Ford Explorer parked in structure had rear passenger’s window smashed out and complainant’s purse, which she had placed under the back seat before going in to workout, was stolen. He credit card had already been fraudulently used at a gas station in Sterling Hgts.
Malicious Destruction of Property:
McManus, 12/28-12/30
House toilet papered and sidewalk spray-painted.
Minnesota, 12/22-12/23, 1800-0740 hrs.
Passenger side of ’03 Ford Van parked in driveway keyed.
Pond Ridge, 1/1, 0001-0030 hrs. An ’03 Lincoln Town Car had rear window shot out and several dents in trunk from what appeared to be a BB gun. Two windows on one residence, and one window on another residence, both in the immediate vicinity of where the car was parked, had what appeared to be BB holes in them, as well. .
Minors and Alcohol:
Rochester and Square Lake, 12/31, 2258 hrs.
Vehicle stopped for an expired license plate. During the course of the stop a 19-year-old male passenger from Troy was found in possession of a 6 pack of beer. He was ticketed and released for MIP.
Phone Calls/Harassment/Threats:
Complainant reported a young sounding male called and asked to speak with her 16-year-old daughter. When her daughter picked up the phone, the caller made some statements that didn’t seem to make sense. Another call was subsequently received, but complainant immediately hung it up. During the course of a third call, the young male caller swore at complainant for hanging up on him. Referred to Call Annoyance Bureau.
Complainant reported a 26-year-old male has made numerous attempts to contact her via phone, e-mail, and has shown up at her place of employment. He appears to be trying to initiate a relationship with her. Several of the calls and e-mails were of a threatening nature. PPO procedures outlined.
Complainant reported he received a threatening call from a male who claimed to be outside his residence. Complainant stated he hired an “escort” earlier in the evening, but she had since left without incident. A female called while officers were on scene, identifying herself as “Infinity.” She spoke in a vulgar manner until the officer identified himself to her at which point she hung up. The number was re-contacted and a message left with the party to have no further contact with complainant. Area check proved negative.
Complainant reported receiving threatening calls and that someone is driving by his house, throwing “stuff” at his car.
Complainant reported receiving threatening calls from an ex-relative.
Complainant reported neighbor is harassing her family by videotaping their activities.
Retail Fraud:
Linen ‘N Things, 790 E. Big Beaver, 1/1, 1700 hrs.
Complainant stated she locked the door at closing time to prevent additional customers from coming in. She stood by to allow those completing purchases to leave. She reported that a male subject had entered the store empty handed. While she unlocked the door to allow another customer out, the subject quickly approached her carrying a $329.99 vacuum, attempting to leave. She knew he hadn’t purchased it, as she had been monitoring the registers. She challenged him for the receipt; he became irate, insisting she let him out. When she hesitated, he threw the vacuum at her, and forced his way out. She was not injured. It appears the suspect dropped his cell phone when he fled. Investigation continues.
Suspicious Incidents:
Park View, 12/31, 0300 hrs.
Complainant noticed damage to his gutter near the roof. He discovered an 18-year-old male from Troy who is a friend of his 16-year-old stepdaughter apparently climbed up on the roof to try and speak to her through her bedroom window in an effort to resolve an argument the two had earlier in the evening. They apparently have dated on and off for a while. Officers contacted the male and conveyed a message on behalf of the parents not to be at their residence unless they were also present.
Welfare Checks:
Troy Officers responded to two incidents involving individuals experiencing emotional/psychological difficulties and assisted w/transport to the hospital for evaluation/commitment.
Complainant advised her husband was missing/unaccounted for; she stated he has a history of psychological distress. He and his vehicle were entered into the computer system as missing.
Arrest Summary:
In addition to those outlined above, the following arrests were also made during the period:
Drunk Driving: 6
- In one of the cases the 50 year old male from Metamora who had been arrested
for Drunk Driving was found in possession of cocaine, as well.
- In another case, the driver was a 20-year-old male from Warren.
Retail Fraud: 6
- In one case, the 17 year old female from Highland Park was found in possession of
marijuana, as well.
- In another case, the suspect was found in possession of Vicodin and other Rx
drugs illegally.
- In a third case, the suspect tried to represent herself as a juvenile, however her
true identity as an adult was eventually discovered.
